Fast Track to Dementia

The drug links

dementOpinion vary as always, but dementia is thought to be caused by gradual changes and damage in the brain is caused by a build-up of abnormal (amyloid beta) proteins in the brain which leads to a decline in a person’s mental, and sometimes physical abilities.

Much of the research on Alzheimer’s disease has focused on the amyloid beta protein which clumps together into sticky fibrils that form deposits in the brains of people with the disease. Australian researchers have come up with a sound frequency treatment that breaks up these plaques and is giving new hope to some dementia sufferers. However there is still no outcome of research into the cause.

Another avenue is that older people who take certain medicines to treat conditions like urinary incontinence, depression, asthma, allergies, and sleeping problems should be warned that their use may bring a higher risk of dementia. A small Indiana University study found that people using “anticholinergic medications” did worse on thinking-related tests and had smaller brain sizes than those who didn’t take them.

However if we think holistically about the body mind, what impairs bodily function is quite likely to be what also impairs mental function on a micro scale. In the body the toxic residues of chemicals we ingest through our food and from the environment accumulate and eventually cause some form of degenerative disease be it arthritis or cancer.

We know that by keeping the body fit and healthy that the metabolism is self-cleaning and self-regulating reducing the risk of disease. In other words if you use it often enough and keep it in good shape it is more likely to go the distance. Therefore using our minds as they are meant to be used is probably good way to avoid dementia.

What is the mind?

Science has worked out quite a lot about our bodies and in general agrees with the opinions of the wise that good hygiene, good nutrition and adequate exercise are essential for good health and body. But when it comes to the mind, scientists can’t even tell you where it is. They know the brain resides in the head and the brain is responsible for the functioning of the body and that it is the hub of bioelectrical activity.

Over the counter medication causing dementia

Yet science doesn’t really seem to be sure if there is any difference between mind and brain. Within the science of yoga the mind is divided into many sections and is completely separate from the brain.

The brain is largely responsible for processing our sensory perception and maintaining the function of the autonomic nervous system. It is true that when we think or act in certain ways, different areas of the brain are activated, but these are activating in association with mind or consciousness which is not fixed.

Consciousness can be anywhere in the body, but because we typically identify ourselves as being the physical body and we identify our mind as being our brain, we limit ourselves in terms of perception function.

Preventing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

Once we have it, it’s virtually too late and will eventually come down to family, friends and professional caregivers to provide some continuity of life. But all too often with dementia, people can lose all or partial cognition and memory.

The most common sense approach is to have a healthy lifestyle with a chemical free diet and adequate exercise. Instead of believing in other people’s rubbish, we should exercise our minds by forming our own opinions and being flexible enough to change them when they are proven wrong.

As well as avoiding or using medications sparingly, Alzheimer’s and dementia may well be prevented in the closing thought is that iIt could well be that dementia could be caused by inflexible attitudes that actually contribute to the degeneration of our grey matter?
