The Gotra System

The first knowledge of genetics

j0289165a

India is a country that has been largely dismissed by historians and in fact Indian history was rewritten by the British only a few hundred years ago. They never took into account any of India’s true history, however the real history of India is slowly merging to show a culture far more advanced than any European culture stretching back for many thousands of years.

It is from India that we received the decimal system of numbers and Indian scientists had a knowledge of our place in the universe unmatched in Europe until the 20th century. Western scientists scoff at the idea that the Indians knew anything, however the facts of history are now making a mockery of modern science that has yet to learn anything new.

Indian civilisation has been devoted to knowing life whereas Western civilisation has been all about capitalising on what life offers. From the Indian perspective of knowing life, they knew the consequences of inbreeding and they loved life enough that they wanted it to continue in perpetuity on our planet.

Many thousands of years ago they would’ve observed consequences of inbreeding, they would have seen the deformities and genetic weaknesses as are prevalent in today’s society. responding to need, they developed a basic understanding of genetics, inherited characteristics and behaviours.

When the British first arrived in India there were reports written proclaiming the desirable physical attributes of the Indian population. Then the British pillaged the country and set it up for all the social problems that India has today.

Maintaining human vitality

The Gotra system is still in existence and through it, family lineages can be traced back thousands of years to the great sages or founding fathers of India.  According to the Brihadaranyaka Upanisad 2.2.6, Gautama, Bharadvāja, Viśvāmitra, Jamadagni, Vashishtha, Kaśhyapa and Shandilya are the seven sages (Saptarishi).

The progeny of these seven sages were declared to be gotra linesand in Indian (Hindu) society, the term gotra means clan. It broadly refers to people who are descendants in an unbroken male line from a common male ancestor or patriline.

For instance if a person says that he belongs to the Bharadvāja Gotra then it means that he traces back his male ancestry to the ancient Rishi (Saint or Seer) Bharadvāja. So Gotra refers to the Root Person in a person’s unbroken male lineage.

So what is understood as the gotra system means that couples within the same lineage cannot marry.  Over the untold generations this has ensured the good health and perhaps even the higher intelligence of the population and perhaps that is something we should be doing today?
